f
watching the dog jump through hoops is the extent of your current exercise
regime, you may not be aware of the many beautiful walking, running, biking
and fitness activity trails located throughout New Jersey.
The boardwalks are the first
choice (and perhaps the most convenient) of many walkers and joggers and are usually open to the growing variety of wheeled vehicles during the
off-season, or in the early morning hours at many locations during the summer. If
your primary motivator is simple exercise you need look no further, the
boardwalks are perfectly suited to your needs. Consider adding the more
challenging trails to your regular routine for more exercise than a
flat smooth surface, or to simply enjoy the solitude as you stroll through
forests amidst the flowers and wildlife.
Walking and Running
It's possible to pick your spot, throw on an old
comfortable
pair
of shoes, and head out on your walk. If you were seriously entertaining
establishing a regular schedule though, it would be a good idea to spend
some time
choosing appropriate footwear. You'll be pleased to know that $200
air-enhanced shoes with exotic sole compounds are not required equipment -
simply sticking with a medium range quality shoe from a well-known
manufacturer is sufficient.
That doesn't mean you can't go for the top of the
line if that's what you want, it really all depends on you and what level
of usage you plan on. My own running shoes last a long, long time :-).
Bicycling
The heavy single-gear, balloon-tired, spring
suspended bikes of yesteryear were
replaced by multi-gear, feather light racing bikes with razor thin tires
during the 70s and 80s only to be replaced themselves by the latest rage:
Mountain Bikes. Ironically, the higher comfort, wider tires and rider
posture on these latest models more closely resembles those good old
heavy-duty bikes previously replaced.
As with casual walking, there's no need to rush out
for new equipment if you intend to stay primarily on the sidewalks and
boardwalks, but venturing out on the trails with those thin tires on the
racing bikes isn't recommended for the sake of safety and won't be very
enjoyable at that.
Boarding/Skating
The boardwalks are again a good simple
choice during the off-season, but become more problematic with the crowds
and laws against walking and chewing gum at the same time during the
summer. It's best to find a trail you like for the most enjoyment
year-round. Check our Wheels Shop for
some choices and links for more skates and boards. Be sure to pick up all
the protective accessories as well - it's one thing to get a
boardwalk splinter in your foot while
walking to the beach and quite another to have one jammed deep in your
kneecap or funny bone.
