NASCAR
National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing
Founded in 1948, NASCAR has evolved from racing
"stock" cars - the exact same models the general public could buy - to
advanced racing machines that resemble their namesakes in sheet metal,
but far exceed the capabilities of the "family" car at the local
dealership.
With NASCAR popularity growing in leaps and bounds, those family cars
are never far away - they're found by the thousands in the parking lots of
racetracks around the country on any given weekend. Anywhere but NJ that
is, we have no track here at the present time. There has been some noise
lately about working out an arrangement to bring NASCAR racing to the
state, but it's not time to start holding your breath yet.
In the meantime, a drive over to neighboring states to see a race,
while inconvenient, is not an extraordinary hardship. Southern residents
can shoot over to Dover, DE and those in the north can easily access the
Pocono's for an exciting day trip. Watkins Glen is a bit more of a trek,
making an overnight stay the most sensible approach.
